The TL's Richard Connor writes about how the paper can't write about the "investigation" at the courthouse

There's enough gossip about an alleged federal investigation of county government "to make a person believe the old where-there-is-smoke-there-is-fire adage," Connor writes.

This is pathetic.
He's basically saying to his readers "our reporters are too inept to verify anything, so will someone in the public please come forward to help us do what my staff cannot?"
Add to that the unethical premise for his column: we can't verify these potentially harmful rumors so I'll just float them as idle gossip.

You didn't get the column. It was an explanation to readers about why you have to verify things and get your facts from reliable sources before printing anything.
Everybody out there is wondering why we and the TL aren't writing about this. We get calls all the time. He explained why. Though I wish Hola had written it.

Oh I get the column, its just disappointing to hear an editor justify not writing about his friends. Finding a reason NOT to write a tough story is easy. The TL has a fantastic - and recently - underutilized county reporter with great sources. An editor with a backbone would get something more substantial in the paper.

More substantial? Oh, now you're supposed to write news stories about rumors? There is no evidence yet. None. Most of it may not even be true but I guess you would write about it anyway. Fantastic journalism.

7:47 a.m., great attitude. Yes, your approach is much better. I suggest you ask the county commissioners if they are being investigated. Then, when they tell you no, you can ask him or her to bend over so you can insert your head in its proper place

So you would write a story about someone denying a rumor? Great journalism, chap.
