Changing of the guard at Times-Shamrock

The fourth generation of the Lynett/Haggerty families is taking command in Scranton as the third steps aside, Times-Shamrock newspapers are reporting late Monday. In summary:

• Co-publisher George Lynett, 64, will "cut back on direct management" as brother Edward J. Lynett, 66, did four years ago. Third brother Bill Lynett, 61, remains as co-publisher of The Times-Tribune and CEO of Times Shamrock.

• Robert J. Lynett, 35, George V. Lynett Jr., 36, Matthew E. Haggerty, 37, and W. Scott Lynett, 39, join Bill as co-CEOs of Times-Shamrock. Yes, that's five co-CEOs. We'll see how that works out.

• Daniel P. Haggerty, 32, son of Cecelia Lynett Haggerty, replaces Scott Lynett as Citizens' Voice publisher.

• Gregory E. Lynett, 33, son of Edward J. Lynett Jr., replaces Scott Lynett as Hazleton Standard-Speaker publisher.

The fourth generation is from left, Greg Lynett, Matthew Haggerty, George V. Lynett Jr., W. Scott Lynett, Bobby Lynett and Daniel P. Haggerty. (Photo from the T-S Web site.)

This is the generation that starts to unravel the corporation. Just take a look at the way the new gang is going to run the firm. It's confusing, overlapping and downright inefficient.
It won't be long before turf wars break out. Imagine the size of the egos!
Imagine, two publishers for two papers. Same duties, titles, et al. How confusing.
Add the fact that the Irish Tenors are still in the mix makes it even more of a mess.

Maybe there's a built-in "No fighting, play nice" thing they had to sign to guarantee each their 500k a year. And remember, there's more of that DNA where those guys came from.

Where's the women in the family? The Lynett gang of stay-at-home-moms is pathetic. They spit out more and more kids to make sure the next generation is completely blown out. This is more like the Last Generation.

Sure and begorrah, 'tis a family of Irish asshats,

Which Lynett gets to run the TL when they buy it off Connor next year?

Reminds me of the Hunter S. Thompson book, "A Generation of Swine."

I like all the negative comments about these guys. I guess when you see they all have MBA's JD's and are more credentials at 35 than most people have in thier entire faily tree it is easy to hate on them. Man, what idiots, and Irish on top of it all.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, there's no chance that their family connections and family wealth have anything to do with all those "credentials" and all those academic degrees.
Scan those bios and for something resembling a real job, as opposed to highly paid rumpswab.
I'm roughly their age and after 15 years in the newspaper business, I'm betting I've worked harder than the six of them put together.

Shrewdness is and always has been the touchstone for their prosperity. Hard work is certainly one avenue to achieve that survival skill. It is doubtful that they have taken that road, because it would require learning (oftentimes) from failure -- a pretty alien circumstance because they have been protected from most occasions that present that risk.

Anonymous said...

They all had silver spoons in their mouthes when they were born.

Anonymous said...

Bottom line: they get the company and the tradition. Post your complaints all you like. In ten years it will be 50 newspaper and 20 radio stations...this thread will long be forgotten.

Anonymous said...

quite honestly the Lynetts seem to have a good training program for family members. They are well educated and as the last poster said they will be in control of 50 newspapers and 20 radio stations. Not a bad life.

Anonymous said...

I say congrats to the boys. People here sound like it's a sin that they were born to a wealthy family. If you ran the company and had kids you wouldn't hand it all to them when you thought they were ready?

Anonymous said...

My guess is they're all actually Connor's secret investors. Why divide when you can just conquer?

Anonymous said...

Their main job is to try and force the TL to sell. That was a condition of their moving up. It's a way for the young ones to prove they are worthy of their new jobs and titles. The TL will disappear in the not so distant future. The CV will be shuttered and the TL name will be retained.

Anonymous said...

You may just see a new name for the Wilkes-Barre paper that will emerge as a result of the Lynett boys putting the TL out of business.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, they're all whizzes for sure. I remember Matt Haggerty's secret assignment that had him camped out in the TT newsroom for months. Wasn't it that stupid promotion that had plumbers calling you to drum up business? WTF happened with that? That's the family's training program, stupid make-work shit like that, or running one of their highly valued properties in East Bumfuxx into the ground. Hey you Lynett rumpswabs trumpeting their "credentials," don't tell me that nepotism had nothing to do with these guys becoming publishers at 30.

Anonymous said...

I actually like the way the Lynetts structured their management program. None of the children were guaranteed anything. They all had to work a job outside the biz.
Scott Lynett was a prosecutor in Philadelphia, if I recall correctly.
And anyone who actually worked in any of the Lynetts' buildings knows the 4th generation had to work in every aspect of the biz, with the sole exception of greasing the presses. They had to work circulation, sell ads, write stories as reporters, etc.
Say whatever you want, but at least the 3rd generation knows the 4th generation can handle the biz and actually wants to be there.
So many family owned companies die because there's no succession plan or because there's no future generation that wants to take over. The Lynetts seem to have gotten this one right.
Besides, would everyone rather the Lynetts sell out to a publicly owned company, where stock price is the only thing that matters? Last time I looked, there was an awful lot of newsroom cutting around the country because share prices have been slipping.
Local, family ownership does have many benefits.

I hope the new duo running the CV fires that f uck Holeva.

9:03...here's the clue. Nepotism in government, where tax dollars are concerned, bad. Nepotism in a family-owned business is tradition. It's the natural order of things. It's where "Jones & SONS" comes from. Do you mean to think that if you showed up with the sheepskins these guys have accumulated that you think you should get the job over the owner's kids just because they are they owner's kids? Remove your head from your ass and take another run at it.

Anonymous said...

To the Fluffer known as 10:58:
Oh, I get it. Nepotism in business is a tradition....like Muslim bride burning.
Actually, in the year 2008, most smart businesses avoid hiring or promoting people based on their last name or who they're related to.
Professionally run operations know that nepotism in business is wrong for the same reason it's wrong in government: If you hire people based on their family connections, rather than on whether they're best-qualified, then the taxpayers are getting screwed, or the shareholders, or in the case of a newspaper, the readers and the community.
It's certainly the Lynetts' legal right to hire whoever they want, including their kids, no matter how qualified they are or aren't. That doesn't make it right, or the best thing for their properties. So let's not pretend it's anything but old-school feather-bedding.
It's yet another reason why the NEPA newspaper world, especially Times Shamrock, remains stuck in the 1950s.

Anonymous said...

Who runs the New York Times these days? Punch, Pinch, Poke--whoever, it's the heir. And what's wrong with that?

Anonymous said...

To 9:03 said...

That was nothing but a longer version of "my head is still up my ass." The next generation didn't get the jobs because of their "family connections", they got the jobs because they ARE the family.

Hiring their own offspring, not the best thing they can do for their properties? Well it's too bad you weren't there to let them know how to handle their properties. Hiring offspring, automatically a bad move. Got it.

How old are you?

Dear 9:03 said,

Spoken like a man with no children. I hope I'm right anyway.

Get back to work, Pikulski.

Anonymous said...

Hee hee hee. I've dealt with at least a couple of those guys -- no Mensa candidates in that family.

Anonymous said...

New York Times and Times Shamrock -- yup, a lot in common.

Anonymous said...

3:08...LOOK! QUICK, DIRECTLY OVERHEAD! HURRY UP!!! Oh, damn, you missed it.

It was the point.

Anonymous said...

This seems to be a free-for-all, so what the hell:

I am the furthest thing from a Lynett kneepadder. That said, the family runs a tight ship regarding kids taking over. Their Management Training Program or whatever was on the Web at one point -- the consultancy they hired posted it as an work example. It made for fascinating reading.

The program is rigorous and demanding. You have to have an advanced degree or two, and you have to work outside the family for a while. Only then do you get into the program and spend years selling ads in Towanda or whatever.

I was struck by how the family notes in the plan that benefiting from T-S is a birthright, but working at T-S is not. They are candid in saying that some people will simply want to live off their fraction of ownership. And that's fine. But if you want to run the biz some day, you have to prove yourself.

I say good for them.

"Fredo, you're my older brother, and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever."

Anonymous said...

If going outside means they're picking people like Beaupre and Murph, they're better off just hiring their kids.

Anonymous said...

Well, I wish I could do better than 10:01 AM, but not possible. Hey, what's wrong with inheritance? Grow up whiners, pretty please? This family did inheritance with more intelligence and dignity than any megabucks examples I've either known or read about. Years of research and professional advice and who knows how much money; all were undertaken to get it right. Sure, don't we all wish we had funded opportunites like advanced degrees, and big doors open to us if we pass the tests, but the Lynett's forebears earned them that right. This new generation will pass it on. Wealth ruins most 2nd generations, let alone 4th. Like death, wealth is a part of life. This poster never had it, but I don't hold it against these men (yes, they're MEN!)who have big shoes to fill, as each generation before them improved every aspect of the businesses they now inherit. My bet would be on them further improving it.

Anonymous said...

You know what's wrong? It's your father. Yeah, YOUR FATHER!!! That lazy bum. You should be inherting a newspaper empire. Instead, you're inheriting his newspaper route! If only your bastardofa father had worked harder! That's what you're REALLY upset about, isn't it? That miserable no-good sumbitch didn't work hard enough to leave you a birthright. He left you a birth-wrong!

Either that, or it's your karma. Hey, if you're so smart, how come YOU ain't rich?

Let's talk about the new WBRE weather girl's crazy outfits. Nice-looking chick. Needs some help with the clothes. The pink disco number with the waist belt was terrifying.

The Lynetts are wise, the Lynetts are good. No wonder they have built the finest award-winning newspaper in America! We are privileged to be allowed to live in the same corner of the state as them. Perhaps the Lynetts are actually descended from aliens who came here to bring us knowledge and civilization. That's the only way to explain the wonder that is Times Shamrock.

Anonymous said...

I don't think I've ever encountered anyone who wished so hard that he was a Lynett and who is so bitter that alas, he is not.

Anonymous said...

As for the 2 who brought up the Management Program,points...
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! I've worked with each on some level and have had nothing but respect for the professionalism brought to the table. Nothing was just handed to anyone. These postions were indeed earned....and the expectations are greater than you could imagine. They've got some tough nuts to crack! Who is up to the challenge? Also, From an operational standpoint, I've never seen anything asked of a colleague that they wouldn't do themselves...
They have always lead by example.

We tried that, and she looked damned good in my clothes.

Two thoughts. First, why interrupt this thread for that crap?

Second, do you seriously expect a former Miss America contestant to take beauty tips from Heyna Nation???? "Yo, Bubba, I need two-tree more-a dem tanktops."

A half-dressed weathergirl is a hell of a lot more interesting than The Mild Colonial Boys.
I declare this Lynett thread closed.

And a minor correction. Couldn't agree more with 4:49 however she was a Miss USA contestant.

One virtue of hiring within the family is that there's a greater loyalty to private, family ownership.
