Russ used to charge the newsroom with energy. He made his work seem effortless and established himself as a fixture in the Northampton County courthouse in short order. He was a goofball and inveterate metalhead, but presented himself as a pro, through and through. He had my utmost respect.
The E-T and the profession suffered a great loss, and the top brass in Easton deserve a lot of credit for the compassion they've shown Russ' family and those on staff who were close to him.
My condolences to all.
You would have to search far and wide to find a better guy than Russ Flanagan. In all my time in this business I've known few better organized and more effective reporters -- and no better people -- than Russ. A terrible tragedy.
I'm reminded of a passage from "Lonesome Dove" when Woodrow F. Call is carving a sign over the grave of his fallen friend Josh Deets that concludes saying, "Never shirked a task. Cheerful in all weathers. Splendid behavior."
That was Russ Flanagan in a nutshell. RIP my friend.

Terrible, terrible event. After reading about him, I wish he had worked in the NEPA market. 33, died alone, there's got to an autopsy and an explaination.

There was an autopsy, but it was inconclusive, which makes it all the more difficult to take.
