"The cheapest man in the whole world:" Bill Lynett

So writes V. Scott Beddome, a Wisconsin radio guy quoting fellow radio guy Lee Arnold. Beddome is publishing - on his blog - the story of how a group of Milwaukee radio guys tried to trick The Who into playing in Milwaukee. Surely an item of interest to broadcast people.

Holy flying f*ck! What a worthless pile of crap that read was. The d-bag who wrote it sounds like he desperately needs Lee Arnold to be recognized as some sort of Milwaukee version of Malcolm McLaren.

He makes Milwaukee sound like London. Them, after 31 chapters there's no ending.

What a sad existence. Lame DJ waits 25 years to tell the story no one cares about.

HTF did you find that? If you Google "DJ's are cool, not the dorks people think they are" that's the article that comes up.

What a worthless waste of time.

I'd love to hear from someone who knew the Milwaukee scene back then to find out how much of this is true, and how much is pot-warped memory.

Tedious.

This story makes very little sense to one. Who played? The man does not say. In my country, the journalist is trained to include the who, the what, the when and the where. So who is the who in Milwaukee?

I think the first poster has it right. This is some doped out former jock who thinks someone cares.

I guess the Who played in Milwaukee, but he never really gets to that part, after about 30 chapters.

Mr. NEPA really had to search the bowels of the Internet to find this one. The search result is impressive, the story is unreadable.

Any radio guys out there who know anything about this Milwaukee travesty of rock and roll justice?

Well, where do I start? The book is being published in chapters every couple days so- duh- there's no ending yet. So THE WHO, what when and where is yet to come #3.

For the moron who has no life of his own at top- Yes- this was a big event in Milwaukee and this piece is being well received by many in the radio world as well as in the city. The author was considered among the more intelligent of the rock jocks at the time as he hosted a call-in style talk show that was compeling and ahead of it's time. He's not the type to BS. He's credible. If you'd have taken the time to actually read the story instead of looking for a hack you'd see that what he's describing is actually quite an amazing thing. Sure, it's his first work and he's a much better talker than writer- some structural problems there in his lineal description that make it "tedious" - but that comes from his attempt at getting things right and including details that are likely for posterity more than for the story.

Also, Lee Arnold IS a well known radio figure who many see as a "sort of Milwaukee Version of Malcolm Mc Laren." It wasn't the author who said Lynett was cheap- it was Arnold. And the effort wasn't an effort to trick The Who- it was an attempt to pressure them that turned into something bigger for the city.

So- now- if you will- refer me to your wonderous writings.

"The true story of how one gifted radio program director and his staff, with nothing more than a great idea and their own relentless passion, made national news and history bringing The Who to their town. Sex, drugs, and a generous helping of wireless swagger, that radio surname magic one should properly call only by its given name, rock and roll... Highly recommended..."

That's from radio intellectual David Martin.

This entire thread has got to be a joke. Other than the author and a few stoners who won albums from QFM, does anyone really GAS?

Looks like the author is somehow connected to NEPA media. It took him less than a day to read the thread and respond.

Upon further review, this guy's entire blog is about a radio stunt and one concert (that he's clearly fixated on).

Should make a great book. What a freakin' retard.

Google the dude's name. It all comes back to one event. Ewwwww.

His primary blog (referenced earlier)is a common rock radio nostalgia site with a number of different contributors that date from the the 70's up through the 90's. It contains a lot more than one story- but you seem to be one who writes before he knows WTF is going on.

Is there such a thing? Radio nostalgia blogs? Ah yes, I remember that one time back in 1981 when I got blasted and turned on the local FM jock. Gave him a call. He was blasted too. Played some Tull for me. Those were the days.

Hmmm.. not one comment about Bill Lynett. Wasn't that the subject?

Bill's very fat.

What comment is there to make? About the only mention of him in the 31 chapters is the title of this thread. There is another mention about he likes women and booze. Real Earth shattering stuff.

Let's review:

*Bill is cheap and likes girls

*The Who may have played Milwaukee in 1982. More info on that is coming.

*A DJ sat out on a ledge with a potty and some weed.

*More chapters are coming.

I just saved you all from the least informative 31 chapters ever written on radio or broadcasting.

This just in:

Bill payed the 40k, The Who played, and everyone lived happily ever after.

He just added chapters 97 and 98.

"Hope I die before I get old..."
"Long live rock..."

Better yet:

"I've got a good job
And I'm newly born.
You should see me dressed up in my uniform.
I work in hotel, all gilt and flash.
Remember the place where the doors were smashed?

Bell Boy! I got to keep running now.
Bell Boy! Keep my lip buttoned down.
Bell Boy! Carry this baggage out.
Bell Boy! Always running at someone's heel.
You know how I feel, always running at someone's heel."

Still angry at the man after all these years. How's the pony tail holding up?

Sting was the Bell Boy. If you don't know that step off this thread.

So other than the enticing headline, this thread is complete and utter masturbation.

Bill Lynette payed for the Who to come to Milwaukee, the Who played, the guy on the ledge couldn't adapt to the modern ways of rock&roll and withered, the author began painting apartments for a living, and the hero came back to Milwaukee - humbled and disgraced before he found the R&R Mecca of Harrisburg PA.

Can't wait for the Lifetime movie to come out.

The nicest thing I can say about this blog is:

1) The author has/had some really good dope in the 80's. Perhaps London Funk.

2) The "chicks" liked the other jocks in Milwaukee - but lets face it - "chicks" who chase jocks are too rude for the band. Any band. Even Uriah Heap.

3) 25 years later the author still doesn't know how to process the fact that the Who came to Milwaukee.

Let me help. Keith was dead, all of their important music had already been written, the Clash and Santana were on the bill to help fill stadiums, and no one outside of Milwaukee gives a shit about Milwaukee.

Milwaukee makes shitty beer and decent cheese. Laverne and Shirley live there, so do Richie and the Fonz. Pottsy Webber and Ralph Malph could have pulled a stunt that brought the Who into Arnold's during their heyday , but wanted to pick up chicks instead.

It was all up to Joannie and Chachi to reel in the Who once 82 rolled around. Looks like they made it after all.

Please, a new thread Mr. NEPA. This one is such a friggin' dud it boggles the mind.

"Even Uriah Heap..."

That's "HEEP," buster.

Comes the dawn: This quite possibly is the band that inspired Spinal Tap.

You in radio, man? "Lynette payed"? You mean paid, right dude?
Someone cut this thread off before it bores me to tears.
Oops, already has.
Guess we have to wait until Connor's next column is published before NEPAMedia updates.
