Stories we missed: Times Shamrock buys Virgin Islands paper (!)

Somehow, this seems like a scheme an entirely legitimate business move to hold annual Times-Shamrock meetings in the Caribbean or get Lynett-Haggerty kids someplace nicer to work their way up in the biz than Shamokin and Hazleton. But the Daily News of the Virgin Islands won a Pulitzer Prize in the last 15 years, so it can't be all bad. (The paper won the Pulitzer under Gannett ownership in 1995.)

I've been there a few times; real nice island. But when it's the rainy season, the stuff comes down like a firehose. Good air service, even better if you have a company jet.

Oh God, Carten, how I've missed your slipper-and-Afghan reminiscent homespun witticisms. They make me want to prepare a frothy cup of hot chocolate and read the collective works of Thomas Wolfe -- hardbound; green-tossled bookmark on page, matching my silky, James Lipton-styled robe. Ohhhhhh the aristocracy!

And, forsooth*, dear Anony, what hath that to do with my description of the Fair Isle of Thomas, Saint?

I am not of those who would wear a silky, James Liption-styled robe even to a Hallowe'en party, and would advise you to avoid such an ensemble if at all possible. I think he has reduced himself to doing Geico commercials now, sitting at the edge of the pool, his perfecty pedicured toes stirring (not shaking) the water.

But, thank you for missing me. Even though I was merely remarking on the weather in the Lesser Antilles, it's gratifying to know you are thinking of me.

*for-sooth= for truth

What Tom (Sawyer)Carten twice removed from the world of hard news doesnt realize that theres money to be spent better here in Wilkes Barre/ie better newsroom and press equitment/a laptop to file news stories and photos from out in the field/ to hire more staffers for areas that a really understaffed...but im sure hell come up with his usual snug New Englander answer to these reallife problems...so...screw him !!!

I know what's needed here. But when the item came up about the USVI, I mentioned what it was like down there. Hey, maybe someone is dreaming of a lateral move and an Island full of Virgins is just the place.

Go back and check what I wrote -- not what's bubbling just below the surface in your mind.

Sheesh. Talk about news reporters wading into something with an agenda already in place.

Okay, now could somebody please answer the big rumor/question? Is Times Shamrock going to buy the Pocono Record? I think it is still for sale....but still has the same crap news.

The Pocono Record is still up for grabs...and still being sold as part of the entire Ottaway chain, not as a individual paper. The smart money has GateHouse Media as the front-runner for the the chain.

The TL is choking these days, the rope is so tight around their neck
from the Times Shamrock company. Now in the virgin islands! Maybe Pocono will be next! The ship is sinking.

This has been implied for more than a year. From what I can see, the TL ship is sailing just fine and kicking ass every day.
