Former Pittston Sunday Dispatch editor and current Luzerne County Community College teacher Ed Ackerman has a reason to get out of bed in the morning -- two, in fact. Former Ackerman proteges Ron Lieback and Tom Venesky in the pages of the Times Leader.

The DeNaples story blows up while the Scranton Times sleeps

Amid reports that Scranton's U.S. attorney is resigning -- and served as a reference for Louis DeNaples -- it's hard not to notice the deafening silence in the Times-Tribune newsroom. The Morning Call has been all over the story, and the Philly and Harrisburg papers have also been active. The Times-Tribune has not published a single staff story about Marino or DeNaples in the last two weeks -- a hometown story that the T-T should own. That was a great story about moving a house at Moosic Lakes, though.

Sixty-four words: The TL's "story" on the Walzer lawsuit settlement

Sad and pathetic. No matter where you work or how much you might not like the Times Leader, it's hard not to sadly shake one's head at how the paper has been completely and totally gutted.

CV: McCants, TL working on settlement

A cryptic story in this morning's Citizens' Voice reports that former TL ad boss Dee McCants is working on a settlement with the paper after it sued her for disclosing trade secrets to her new employer, Times Shamrock. Except that her lawyer says she's never worked for Times Shamrock. Huh? You would think that a TS newspaper could definitively report on whether a person has worked or is working TS.

Sportsjournalists.com is reporting that Ed Christine has turned up on the AP sports desk in New York.

Walzer settles lawsuits against the TL

James Conmy of the Citizens' Voice reported -- four days ago! -- that Allison Walzer had settled her lawsuit against the Times Leader. Meanwhile, all is quiet in the TL. Amazing. It's too bad. The trial would have utter madness.

Someone has set up a Web site where you can search -- by location, organization or domain name -- edits to pages on Wikipedia, which logs the IP address of every change. Nothing too juicy, though someone has been editing John Cole's page.

TL loses summary judgment motion against Walzer

Former Times Leader Editor Allison Walzer can continue with her gender and religion discrimination lawsuit against her old newspaper, a federal judge has ruled. However, she can't include a retaliation claim against Richard Connor in the suit -- no big deal, since Walzer has filed a separate action against Connor alleging retaliation. Pray it all goes to trial.

Kudos to the Times-Tribune of Scranton for leaning on city and state officials for information and access. Most notably, the newspaper wrote last week about how reporter Dave Falchek was denied access to a preliminary hearing.

Kudos to the Voice in W-B hammer attack

The Citizens' Voice had all the goods today after a guy burst into a Plains hair salon Friday and beat the grandmas there with a hammer. The TL only had one name and fairly weak second-hand accounts. The Voice had all the names, a picture of one of the grannies in the hospital, and lots of other detail. (The TL did get a shot of the gross-looking perp as he was arrested). Kudos.

Ken Knelly back in Scranton

A rumble had come up earlier in the year, but the July 1 Times-Tribune (sorry, it was on the towns page) noted that former biz and metro editor Ken Knelly was back in town to work as the chief PR man at Baptist Bible College in the Abingtons. The item didn't mention why he was back in NEPA barely a year after leaving the Times to be the senior editor for business and government at The State in Columbia, S.C.

You've got to love the lead in today's Inky story about the inept Wilkes-Barre terrorist "caught" by the wingnut woman in Idaho. Someone call Casey Jones to write a guest piece defending the W-B's vitrue.

A newspaper editor who extols readers to show "good manners" and keep quiet when others are speaking. Iseman is rolling over in his grave.

The girl from Hazleton: Judi Nathan Giuliani

Vanity Fair went to Hazleton recently to report for the magazine's big profile of Rudy Giuliani's wife, Judith -- who, a lifetime ago, was Judi Stish of Hazleton's Nannygoat Hill section. It's not a flattering profile. Hazleton is apparently off-limits to campaign reporters -- "I'm hearing bad reports about you. Bad reports. You interviewed Mrs. Giuliani's father, in Hazleton!" a flack tells the reporter. Judi's mom tells the reporter -- who got to dad first -- that they're not allowed to talk to the press. Good stuff. Hazleton, as usual, is portrayed as the shithole it is.
