Shakeup at WBRE?

A tipster reports that s/he heard that Agent Andy Mehalshick is moving off the anchor desk. "Since it's better than 50-50 that Lyndall Stout won't be coming back after her baby, that means an entirely new anchor team (again!) at 28." Discuss.

Cutbacks at WBRE/WYOU?

A tipster passes this along from the pay NewsBlues site. "NEXSTAR CUTBACKS: Nexstar Broadcasting Group, a publicly traded company that controls 47 TV stations nationwide, is the latest broadcast group to order system-wide budget cuts and layoffs. Tipsters report the elimination of overtime and part-timers and a 10% across-the-board cutback at WJET-24-ABC in Erie (Market #142) and other Nexstar outlets.

Most of Nexstar's stations were acquired through the acquisition of Quorum Broadcasting in 2003. And many of these stations are licensed under the Mission Broadcasting brand, operated under Local Service Agreements with Nexstar to get around comply with current FCC ownership rules."

WBRE linked to reduction of charges in 'to catch a predator' case

David Weiss reports in Thursday's Times Leader that a man originally charged attempted statutory sexual assault and other crimes got the most serious charges dropped and avoid jail time because of WBRE-TV's heavy involvement in the man's arrest. The story and the man's attorney don't spell it out, but strongly imply it. Agent Andy Mehalshick (pictured interviewing someone for a completely unrelated story) says "We don’t pretend to be the police... I don’t tell them to do it or not do it." Right.

WBRE to do noon news by itself, hires Miss USA finalist to do weather

WBRE will stop simulcasting WYOU's noon news and instead produce its own program at 11 a.m. But perhaps more notably, Kristi Capel -- the "reigning Miss Missouri 2006" -- has been on WBRE since the beginning on January.

Former WBRE weather guy contemplating run for elected office

Vince Sweeney, who used to do the weather on WBRE, is apparently making noise on his blog (click above) about following the paths of Keith Martin and Frank Andrews Shimkus to Harrisburg and/or going on to Washington. Judging by the blog – “I never saw a chestnut roasting on an open fire until I was probably in my 20s. It made for a great lyric in a marvelous song, but chestnuts roasting was never part of my reality” – he'll fit right in.
