Times-Tribune beating the FOI drum

Kudos to the Times-Tribune of Scranton for leaning on city and state officials for information and access. Most notably, the newspaper wrote last week about how reporter Dave Falchek was denied access to a preliminary hearing.

Ken Knelly back in Scranton

A rumble had come up earlier in the year, but the July 1 Times-Tribune (sorry, it was on the towns page) noted that former biz and metro editor Ken Knelly was back in town to work as the chief PR man at Baptist Bible College in the Abingtons. The item didn't mention why he was back in NEPA barely a year after leaving the Times to be the senior editor for business and government at The State in Columbia, S.C.

Borys Krawczeniuk story makes The Drudge Report

MUST CREDIT NEPAMEDIA: Borys Krawczeniuk's Scranton Times-Tribune story about the prisoner who had her baby at the Lackawanna County Prison -- and the guard who used her finger nails to cut the umbilical cord -- made the Drudge Report. Not exactly top billing, but still noteworthy. Kudos.

Ouch: Scranton Times punk'd -- twice

Times-Tribune police reporter writes in a Sunday column about Art Franklin, a fictional character who has appeared in the paper twice in the last year. The first time was in November, when a Scranton firefighter gave the fake name to reporter Dave Falchek. But more recently -- and more damning -- a letter from Art Franklin was published on the editorial page on June 15. "Last Friday, The Times-Tribune mistakenly printed a letter to the editor from (guess who?) Art Franklin," Kemeny writes. In other words, the paper doesn't verify the identity of writers of letters to the editor. Nice.

Some guy didn't like Times-Tribune cartoonist John Cole's piece about anti-immigration picketers and also didn't like that Cole altered the cartoon before it was reprinted in the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Coincidentally, news of this upcoming office convention appears in the Times-Tribune of Scranton. Tim Holmes, manager of Times-Shamrock's community newspaper operation is heading up plans for the party.

The T-T's Dave Falchek calls out the state on faulty data

It was the Times-Tribune and Falchek that discovered NEPA's unemployment numbers weren't as bad as portrayed, the T-T reported Tuesday. Kudos.

The magazine wrote a sendup of Scranton's love of The Office. Good reading all around. "Wanna-be hip weekly Electric City?" Meow! McAullife, of the Times-Tribune, also rates a mention.

God is dead: The TL cites the Scranton Times in a staff edit

We missed this on Thursday, but the institutional voice of the Times Leader cited in support of its staff editorial... the Times-Tribune of Scranton. Does this mean that TL plans to publish a Scranton edition are on hold?
