ReplyDelete400 dollars a week ,nice, real nice somebody should talk to the long time C.V. staffer (at the paper since the 1980s) who has to work a couple a nights a week at a another job after he gets done with his shift at the paper to make ends meet.Nothing wild though, just so his family can have a decent meal.
ReplyDeleteIt's the chain's flagship paper and the biggest in nee-pah. Of course they pay better than the papers in W-B and elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteThey also have a higher threshold for talent when hiring. I know, I know, some sour grapes folks are going to follow this with cynical comments about a person or two who worked there and wasn't that good. But on the whole, yes, they hire better people, demand better work and thus pay a little more.
I don't know too much about the quality of the people they hire...that's self-evident I suppose...and in direct correlation to the corrections published on a daily basis...but pay a little more? No. They are tighter than a duck's ass under water.
ReplyDeleteI would like to know what full-time employee in the newsroom is not earning at least $400 week. If that's true then go bitch to the people who negotiated your union contract. But I doubt it's true. Both papers pay extremely well.
ReplyDeletei was an intern many summers ago at the TT and had a good run at it. got great clips and it led to even better opportunities down the road. $400/week isn't much but it was certainly enough to live on. and it IS a lot more than other papers pay their interns.
ReplyDeleteTo clarify for you, 1:37, all of the copy editors and reporters at the Voice certainly earn more than $400 a week, as mandated by the contract. Shit, I'm pretty sure the janitors are required to make more than that actually. $400 a week is pretty good for an intern, but there are plenty of papers paying more. You proly have to pay at least that much or close to attract good candidates. And it should be noted that the CV interns make the same as the TT interns.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for CV staffers vs. TTers, the Scranton people, while they have higher wages, pay way more for health care and are afraid to ask for OT. I bet at the end of the year, there isn't a huge difference in take-home between people at the CV filing for OT and the Scranton folks.
I feel bad for the person you're talking about 8:03, but most people at both papers are paid decently well (deservedly so) for this industry and the market size.
