Farewell, Beale's Bites

As many people have already noted, Howard Beale of Beale's Bites – a most excellent blog that covers broadcast journalism in NEPA – posted a farewell and an explanation of why he disappeared last year. Farewell, Howard.

  1. "Howard" was a straight-shooter, well-informed and with solid insights into broadcast news. He was obviously bothered when his open forum turned into "open season" and the postings went so negative.

I hope "NEPA Media" keeps posting discussions of TV (and radio). I'll put up with the bile to keep informed on "the biz."

  2. forgive the ignorance, but just who is Howard Beale?

  3. Beale was Millard, right?

  4. I always liked him, but he edited my post about Paulo Gangiamcamo's excessive face and body hair. I think he lost his edge after that.

  8. I'm slightly amused that people are still speculating about my identity. If I had a quarter for all the guesses people had about who I am, I'd have enough money to afford ten sheets of Victory Pig pizza.

But if you're all going to be busybodies, I'll let you in on the big secret: I am the spirit of Tom Powell.

  9. Well then TP, I want to thank you for making me a better writer.

  12. Regarding the OP's remarks, and Beale's on the negative vibe in NEPA journalism:

I can't fathom how two small cities in a backwater of a relatively insignificant state incubate so much animosity among journalists. You'd think you were all scrapping for the last gig as a copyboy in Metropolis or Gotham.

You guys made poisonkitchen.com go away; as harebrained an idea as it was, I was pissed about that.

You all need to chill before people start suing each other.

  16. I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth. Banks are going bust. Shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's no one anywhere that seems to know what to do with us. Now into it. We know the air is unfit to breathe, our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had 15 homicides and 63 violent crimes as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad. Worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy so we don't go out anymore. We sit in a house as slowly the world we're living in is getting smaller and all we say is, "Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster, and TV, and my steel belted radials and I won't say anything." Well I'm not going to leave you alone. I want you to get mad. I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot. I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crying in the streets. All I know is first you've got to get mad. You've got to say, "I'm a human being. God Dammit, my life has value." So, I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out, and yell, "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" I want you to get up right now. Get up. Go to your windows, open your windows, and stick your head out, and yell, "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!" Things have got to change my friends. You've got to get mad. You've got to say, "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!" Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open your window, stick your head out and yell, "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

I think it was fear of being "outed," of having his identity widely known. Face it, the posters here and on "Beale's" sound like the kind of people who'd put a horse's head in your bed.

And you can take those points way for the use of the term "sheets." No one in either Wyoming or Lackawanna valleys uses the word sheets when it comes to pizza. You either get a pie or a tray.

So, while Howard may not have revealed who he is, perhaps he revealed that he is not a local as such.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think the pizza there comes on sheets...
Although you are correct-when I call a local place for a pizza, I ask for a tray...

Unless I'm in Hazleton, then I ask for some pitz...(pronounced pits)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Go anywhere in the south and ask for a pie...they send you to the bakery...

  23. So, while Howard may not have revealed who he is, perhaps he revealed that he is not a local as such.
I've always heard sheets myself, especially when getting a sicilian pie. But that seems to be the case when you get down towards Berwick...or "Berk" as it's pronounced.

  24. Yeah Beale, just change the name. Maybe Howard Schmeale?

  25. It is the international system of currency which determines the vitality of life on this planet. THAT is the natural order of things today. THAT is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today. And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature. And YOU WILL ATONE. Am I getting through to you, Mr. Beale? You get up on your little 21-inch screen and howl about America, and democracy. There is no America; there is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.

  26. Right now there is a whole, an entire, generation that never knew anything that didn't come out of this Tube. This Tube is the gospel, the ultimate revelation. This Tube can make or break presidents, popes, prime ministers. This Tube is the most awesome, goddamn force in the whole godless world, and woe is us if it ever falls into the hands of the wrong people...Listen to me. Television is not the truth. Television is a Goddamned amusement park! Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, story-tellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, side-show freaks, lion tamers and football players. We're in the boredom killing business! So, if you want truth go to God. Go to your gurus. Go to yourselves because that's the only place you're ever going to find any real truth. But, man, you're never gonna get any truth from us. We'll tell you anything you want to hear. We lie like hell. We'll tell you that, uh, Kojak always gets the killer and that nobody ever gets cancer at Archie Bunker's house. And no matter how much trouble the hero is in, don't worry. Just look at your watch. At the end of the hour he's going to win. We'll tell you any shit you want to hear. We deal in illusions, man! None of it is true! But you people sit there day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds...We're all you know. You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the Tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the Tube tells you. You dress like the Tube; You eat like the Tube; You raise your children like the Tube; You even think like the Tube. This is mass madness! You maniacs! In God's name, you people are the real thing. We are the illusion! So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now. Turn them off right now. Turn them off and leave them off. Turn them off right in the middle of this sentence I'm speaking to you now. Turn them off!

  29. Jeff Barnd worked at WLVI in Boston...not WPVI. WPVI is in Philadelphia.

I think "Howard Beale" stopped doing the blog site, because someone was going to reveal his true identity, and since he's still employed at a Northeast PA television station, he would probably get fired for being the moderator of Beale's Bites.

  30. 12:21...

Jeff did in fact work at WPVI, that is where he met and married Terri Merryman who worked at KYW. They moved to Florida (she got a job) He couldn't land a TV gig there, the marriage went south (lol) and he got a gig back in Maine. At least I think that was where he went from there.

He also worked in Bangor Maine, Baltimore, Boston and back to Baltimore where he is currently with the Fox Affiliate.
He is re-married with a couple kids and still plays drums.
